Picuris Pueblo Museum & Interpretive Center

Picuris Pueblo Museum & Interpretive Center Information

Picuris Pueblo, located near Peñasco, New Mexico, is the smallest of the 19 Pueblo Nations in the state. The Picuris Pueblo Museum & Arts and Crafts Center opened in July of 1969. It was envisioned by Tribal Council members as a innovative economic development project as well as a home to thousands of artifacts and cultural heritage materials that had been excavated at the Pueblo in the early 1960s. After being opened for decades, the Museum officially closed to the public in the early 2000s due to a number of obstacles. In recent years, federal and state funding helped support the remodeling and expansion of the facility. Rennovation and exhibit design work was completed in 2024. On August 10th, 2025 a new exhibit, "Reemergence: Tradition, Innovation and the Reopening the Picuris Museum," opened to the public in conjunction with the Pueblo's annual San Lorenzo Feast Day.
