Situated in the lush landscapes of the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State, the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe holds a profound connection to the Elwha River and its surrounding lands. Known as “ʔéʔɬx̣ʷaʔ nəxʷsƛ̕áy̕əm̕” in their traditional language, meaning "The Strong People," the Lower Elwha Klallam have thrived in the region for thousands of years, maintaining a rich cultural and spiritual relationship with the natural environment. The Tribe’s history is one of resilience and revival, marked by the groundbreaking restoration of the Elwha River ecosystem, following the removal of two massive dams. This effort, spearheaded by the Tribe and its partners, has become an international symbol of environmental stewardship and cultural renewal.
