Community Introduction

The Samish Indian Tribe, known as the “People of the Sand and Sea,” has a history deeply intertwined with the waters and shores of the Salish Sea. With ancestral ties stretching back thousands of years, the Samish people are known for their maritime traditions, artistic craftsmanship, and stewardship of the natural world. Although their ancestral lands once spanned vast areas of the Salish Sea, the Tribe was officially recognized in 1996 after a long legal battle to reclaim their federal status. Today, the Samish Indian Nation thrives as a sovereign and self-sufficient Tribe dedicated to preserving their culture, revitalizing their language, and fostering economic growth through sustainable practices. The Samish Indian Tribe proudly shares its heritage through public art, cultural events, and environmental initiatives that protect the lands and waters their ancestors called home.
