Community Introduction

The Sauk-Suiattle Indian Tribe, also known as the "People of the Sauk River," resides in the shadow of Washington State's majestic Cascade Mountains. Historically, their ancestors inhabited the valleys and rivers of the North Cascades, thriving as expert fishers, hunters, and gatherers. Salmon fishing, cedar canoe building, and storytelling formed the foundation of their cultural identity. Despite displacement in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the Sauk-Suiattle Indian Tribe has reclaimed their sovereignty and is federally recognized as of 1975. Today, they continue to protect their heritage while advocating for environmental stewardship, focusing on preserving the watersheds, forests, and wildlife central to their way of life. The Tribe is also deeply engaged in community development and cultural revitalization, hosting events that share their traditions with the broader public and future generations.
