The Spokane Tribe of Indians, known as the sqelixʷ, are the descendants of a resilient people who have lived in harmony with the land for centuries. Their ancestral territory encompassed over three million acres in present-day Washington, Idaho, and Montana. The Spokane River, its tributaries, and the surrounding plateaus were integral to their survival and cultural identity. In 1881, the Spokane Indian Reservation was established, encompassing 159,000 acres in northeastern Washington. Despite challenges, the Spokane Tribe has preserved their traditions, language, and way of life while embracing opportunities for growth and development.
