Visit the Yurok Discovery Village, an outdoor cultural site built with traditional materials and techniques passed down through generations.
Located in downtown Klamath, this self-guided park offers visitors a rare glimpse into the architectural knowledge, lifeways, and deep connection the Yurok people have with the land.
Constructed using passive solar design, each structure reflects the ingenuity of Yurok architecture, built into the earth to maintain a steady internal temperature, cool in summer and warm in winter.
The village features a family house, a sweathouse, and a traditional fish-cooking pit. Together, these structures represent a coastal village modeled after the historic community of Rek’-woy near the mouth of the Klamath River.
The wood used to build the homes was reclaimed from former logging sites, including rare pieces of redwood planks and Douglas fir poles, split by hand.
Once you’re done exploring the Discovery Village, be sure to stop by the Yurok Country Visitor Center just across the street. There, you’ll fi nd educational exhibits, handcrafted Native jewelry, and meaningful insights into Yurok history and traditions, making it the perfect stop to deepen your understanding of the Yurok way of life.
The Yurok Discovery Village is a must-see stop for anyone seeking a deeper connection to Yurok Country.
