The Karuk Tribe is one of the largest Native American tribes in California, with ancestral lands along the Klamath River in the state’s northwest. Our culture is deeply rooted in the river, and we carry forward rich traditions of basketry, ceremonial practices, and environmental stewardship, especially through salmon fishing and cultural burning.
MISSION
The mission of the Karuk Tribe is to promote the general welfare of all Karuk people, to establish equality and justice for our tribe, to restore and preserve Tribal traditions, customs, language and ancestral rights, and to secure to ourselves and our descendants the power to exercise the inherent rights of self governance.
LAND
The Karuk Tribe has over 120 village sites along the span of the Klamath River, with a sprinkle of villages along the Salmon River and down towards Somes Bar. Thick vegetation is a combination of oak woodland, timber forest, meadows, floodplains, mountains, grasslands, and villages along the Klamath River Basin.
Karuk has 1,380,000 acres of ancestral homeland and 3,627 tribal members.
