Welcome to the annual contest powwow, the Wacipi, at the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC)! We are excited to invite visitors to join us for a vibrant and culturally rich celebration of life. The SMSC Wacipi is a time-honored tradition that showcases the beauty of Native American culture, and we are delighted to share it with you.
At our Wacipi, you will have the opportunity to witness the mesmerizing dances, hear the rhythmic beats of the drum groups, and experience the rich cultural heritage of the Dakota people.
In addition to the dance competitions, the Wacipi is filled with special ceremonies and traditions, including honorary dances, the Fallen Warrior Ceremony (NO PHOTOS), Giveaways, Naming Ceremonies (NO PHOTOS), and Memorial Honor Songs. These ceremonies are an integral part of our cultural heritage and offer visitors a unique insight into our traditions and values. If you are unsure if you are allowed to take photos, ask.
The SMSC Wacipi Grounds are located in Shakopee, Minnesota, near the Mystic Lake Casino Hotel. We offer ample parking, and we provide golf carts to assist guests in reaching the event grounds. Please remember to treat the central, grassy area of the arena with respect, as it is considered a sacred space.
