The Poarch Creek Indians are descendants of a segment of the original Creek Nation that once covered almost all of Alabama and Georgia. Unlike many eastern Indian tribes, the Poarch Creeks were not removed from their Tribal lands and have lived together for almost 200 years in and around the Reservation in Poarch, Alabama. The Reservation is located eight miles northwest of Atmore, Alabama, in rural Escambia County, about 57 miles east of Mobile.
The Poarch Creek Indians have fought hard to preserve their proud heritage while moving forward into the mainstream of today’s modern society. The Tribe’s determination to maintain both its identity and its inherent right to self-governance is evident in its continued efforts to preserve its Tribal culture and improve its community.
“The Poarch Creek Indians are the only federally recognized Indian Tribe in the State of Alabama, operating as a sovereign nation with their own system of government and bylaws.”
The Poarch Creek Indians are an active partner in the State of Alabama, contributing to economic, educational, social, and cultural projects that benefit both Tribal Citizens and residents of local communities and neighboring towns.
At the heart of this heritage stands the Poarch Creek Indians Museum & Welcome Center, giving a glimpse into Muscogee life. Pottery, traditional baskets, textiles, copperworks and even the 1980 petition for federal recognition are on display. Guided tours and a gift shop are available.
Visitors can stay at the Wind Creek Casino & Hotel Atmore, a 17-story, 236-room luxury resort featuring a spa, movie theater, bowling alley, arcade, amphitheater, RV park and gaming.
